FUOYE LECTURER, OLUSEYI AINA, ANOTHER UNDER FIRE FOR THREATENING JUSTICE SEEKERS IN SEXUAL HARASSMENT AND CORRUPTION ALLEGATIONS AGAINST VC

Akin Akinsoluga, Ado Ekiti.

A lecturer at the Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE), Oluseyi Aina, and another has come under intense scrutiny for his vocal support of the institution's Vice-Chancellor, Professor Abayomi Fasina, who is currently facing serious allegations of sexual harassment and corruption. Aina's actions, particularly his aggressive stance against individuals advocating for justice, have raised significant concerns within the university community.

In a message posted on the WhatsApp platform "FUOYE Congregation and Congregation Reps Forum," Aina wrote:

"Ema fi ara kasa Olohun gbo! (Today, the grains will be separated from the chaff. If they are not cowards, let them show up to challenge. No be social media thing ooo)."

Equally, one Akeredolu Damilola writes:

"U need to be beating to coma; na only u be FUOYE staff wey dey carry news ups & downs. Who send u??
God punish all of u
RUBBISH !!!
"

These statements have been widely interpreted as an attempt to intimidate and silence those seeking accountability in the ongoing investigations involving the Vice-Chancellor. Reports from concerned staff members indicate that Aina and others have consistently used the platform to bully, insult, and threaten individuals advocating for justice, dismissing allegations of sexual harassment as trivial and unworthy of attention.

The controversy surrounding Professor Fasina escalated following a report by the Foundation for Investigative Journalism (FIJ) on January 20, 2025, which included audio recordings allegedly capturing the Vice-Chancellor coercing a subordinate, Mrs. Folasade Adebayo, into an illicit sexual relationship. The leaked recordings have sparked national outrage and led to calls for an independent investigation.

In response to the allegations, the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has initiated a formal investigation into Professor Fasina's conduct. This move came after several civil society organizations expressed a lack of confidence in the investigative panel constituted by FUOYE's governing council, citing concerns over potential bias and a cover-up.

The actions of individuals like Aina and Damilola, who openly defend the accused and disparage those seeking justice, have raised alarms about a pervasive culture of impunity within FUOYE. Critics argue that such behavior not only undermines the integrity of the institution but also poses a direct threat to the safety and well-being of students and staff.

The university's decision not to suspend the Vice-Chancellor pending the outcome of the investigation has further fueled discontent. Observers note that in similar cases at other Nigerian universities, officials accused of such serious misconduct have been suspended to allow for impartial investigations. The absence of such measures at FUOYE is seen by many as a tacit endorsement of the alleged misconduct and has emboldened supporters like Aina to continue their aggressive defense.

Concerned staff members are now calling on relevant security agencies, the National Universities Commission (NUC), and other pertinent authorities to take immediate action. They urge these bodies to address the threats posed by individuals like Aina and Damilola to ensure the protection of whistleblowers and justice advocates and uphold the principles of justice and equity within the university system.

The situation at FUOYE underscores the urgent need for comprehensive reforms to address issues of sexual harassment, corruption, and victimization within Nigerian tertiary institutions. Ensuring a safe and just academic environment is paramount for the well-being of all members of the university community.
