Members of the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU),those of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and those of the National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT) of the Federal University, Oye Ekiti (FUOYE) have vowed never to work with any imposed Candidate as the next Vice Chancellor of the institution.
Rising from it’s joint Congress held on Monday at the University Campus in Oye Ekiti, the Unionists strongly condemned the process employed by the current vice chancellor of the institution to appoint his anointed candidate to succeed him saying due process must be followed.
NAAT Chairman, comrade Abioye James who spoke with newsmen on behalf of others pointed out that the University act must be followed in the appointment of the new vice chancellor .
“The University act is clear on the procedures for the appointment of vice-chancellor of a university, but this procedure have been jettisoned in the ongoing appointment of the next vice chancellor of federal university, Oye Ekiti”.
He explained that flagrant disregard to the provision of the law has led to the withdrawal of some external members of the Governing council from the illegality and have insisted that due process must be followed.
Abioye further stressed that all efforts made by the Unions on campus to ensure what he termed illegality currently pervading the federal university, Oye-Ekiti discontinued were fruitless .
He called on the federal government to address the rot, and what he termed ineptitude and moral decadence at the University under the watch of Prof. Kayode Shoremekun.
The Unionists also prayed the Federal Government to stop the process of selecting a new Vice Chancellor for now, as it said that the current process is still in clear defiance to due process.
“SSANU, NASU and NAAT as Stakeholders in the University have lost confidence in the process and we humbly request the Honourable minister of education to urgently wade into the matter in order to avoid breakdown of law and order in Federal university , Oye-Ekiti as we have lost confidence in the entire process”.
Prayers by the Unionists include; the minister should halt the process for now as it is clear that an acceptable vice-chancellor cannot be appointed with the ongoing process which he said was in defiance to due process.
He also prayed the federal government to ask the current vice chancellor of the institution Prof. Kayode Shoremekun to proceed on terminal leave as he added that Shoremekun has demonstrated vested interest in certain candidate among the applicants.
Other prayers by the Unions were; an acting vice chancellor should be appointed for the University immediately as done in University of Ibadan where the same scenario played out.
An investigation should be carried out to determine the reason for some external members of the Governing council withdrew their participation in the exercise, threatening their resignation from the council among others.
The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Shoremekun could not be reached to hear his own side of the story as at the time of filling this report, as he did not pick calls placed on his mobile lines neither reply to the text message sent to him.
