Ekiti NUJ Issues Strong Press Release, Exposes FUOYE Management’s Lies
The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Ekiti State Council, has issued a strong-worded press release, dismissing a recent statement by the management of the Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE) regarding the case of Dr. Yemi Agbeleoba.
The NUJ’s reaction comes amid growing concerns over the university’s alleged involvement in the harassment and intimidation of Agbeleoba, whose arrest by the Department of State Services (DSS) has been linked to his family’s fight for justice in a sexual harassment case involving the FUOYE Vice-Chancellor.
In the press release, NUJ categorically rejected FUOYE’s statement, urging its members to ignore what it described as a “senseless” press release from the university’s management. The NUJ reiterated its commitment to standing in solidarity with Agbeleoba and all journalists facing persecution.
The press release reads:
PRESS RELEASE
12/2/25
The attention of the leadership of NUJ has been drawn to a senseless press release by FUOYE management regarding the case of Dr. Yemi Agbeleoba. We hereby urge all members to ignore the statement.
The case at hand is a case of solidarity for our member, which is one of the reasons for the establishment of a union.
An injury to one is an injury to all. Let’s remember that it is Agbeleoba today; it could be anybody tomorrow.
Any journalist who publishes the story will be seen as a saboteur and enemy of the union.
Thank you for your understanding.
Signed
Kayode Babatuyi
NUJ Chairman, Ekiti State Council
This statement further exposes what many now describe as the lies and oppressive tactics of FUOYE’s management. By attempting to downplay Agbeleoba’s arrest and dismiss concerns over the sexual harassment case, the university leadership has only intensified public distrust.
Observers argue that NUJ’s firm stance reinforces the belief that FUOYE’s management is engaged in manipulation and suppression of voices calling for justice. The situation continues to generate outrage, with demands growing for an independent investigation into both the sexual harassment allegations and the use of security forces to silence critics.
