FUOYE PROGRESSIVE GROUP (FPG) BEWAIL FUOYE STUDENT UNION GOVERNMENT AS SSANU NATIONAL CALLS FOR CAUTION

The protest by the Student Union of the Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE) against the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU), FUOYE Branch over allegations of sexual harassment and other misconducts on the Vice Chancellor raises critical questions about the motives and priorities of the Student Union. While addressing issues like harassment is important, it appears that the Student Union has overstepped its boundaries and demonstrated selective activism.

FPG observed that the allegations against the Vice Chancellor deserve thorough investigation and appropriate action. However, it is troubling that the Student Union has remained silent on matters that affect their members, arguably more pressing issues within the institution. Notably, the Student Union did not protest when students were victims of harassment by lecturers. A specific instance is the case of Dr. Anthony Agbegbedia a lecturer who was confirmed to have harassed and failed a student because she refused to give in to his advances, yet he not only avoided repercussions but was subsequently promoted a move that raises serious ethical concerns.

FPG further stated that the selective nature of these protests points to an inconsistency in their advocacy especially as it does not concern them nor affect their members. Rather than serving the interests of the entire student body, the actions of the Student Union appear to be influenced by external sponsors with their agendas. This kind of meddling does not serve the students' best interests and risks further destabilizing the institution.

The role of a Student Union is to uphold justice and advocate for all students equally, not to become pawns in battles that serve political or personal interests. If their focus remains skewed, their credibility will erode, and they risk alienating the very students they claim to represent. Instead of playing into divisive narratives, the Student Union should adopt a holistic approach that prioritizes fairness, accountability, and the collective well-being of FUOYE students, especially now that the University management has imposed new charges on their members and is currently working on increasing their school fees as well matters seriously affecting their fellow students.

FPG commends SSANU National for its recent display of caution and professionalism in addressing the suspension of its members. By urging caution and restraint, SSANU has demonstrated its commitment to fostering industrial harmony within the education sector while safeguarding the rights of university workers.

FPG praised SSANU for choosing dialogue and peaceful advocacy over disruptive measures, emphasizing the importance of constructive engagement in resolving issues affecting their members. Such an approach, the FPG noted, aligns with the collective goal of the institution and will provide peace. FPG then pleads with the University Governing Council and Management to annex this opportunity to resolve the lingering conflict before it degenerates further.
