TEARS OF JOY FLOWS IN THE SENATE AS AKINYELURE'S COMMITTEE MENDS FENCES

It was another moment of joy today in the Senate as Distinguished Senator Ayo Akinyelure, FCA, Senate Committee Chairman on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions used his position to put smile on faces of some petitioners who had approached his Committee for redress.

For instance, in a petition brought against the DG/CEO of National Institute for Educational Planning and Administration (NIEPA) by Alhaji Haruna Yahaya and two others, the petitioner wrote against the DG over his alleged abandonment of his duty post, gross misconduct and deliberate attempt to frustrate and humiliate the former Principal Officers of NIEPA.

They stated that the DG committed the following offences; rendering some senior officers of NIEPA redundant by abolishing their offices, refusal to host and hold Council Meetings since December 2020, over bearing influence of the Ag. Registrar and her overdue stay in acting capacity.

They request that the Senate should look into the matter and among other things, urge the DG/CEO to return some of the staff of NIEPA to their positions.

It would be recalled that on the 13th July, 2021, a representative of the petitioners, Ibrahim Arisekola appeared before the Committee and made a presentation. The DG/CEO of the Institute also appeared and made his own presentation and on the strength of their presentations, the Committee directed that the following officers of the Institute should appear before the Committee to make further clarifications, Prof (Mrs) Toun Akinsolu, Dr (Mrs) Adeola Agbaje, Dr Olaolu Festus and Mrs Abimbola Fayanju and the petitioners the DG and the aforementioned officers were present in today's hearing.

Ruling on the petition, the Senate Committee Chairman on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions, Distinguished Senator Akinyelure, in his wisdom like that of King Solomon said, "I can see that there is no harmony and love among the DG/CEO and some of his staff and this is why things are not moving forward in the Institute as expected. I want to therefore rule that the shortchanged staffs should be reinstated back to their former positions which the DG promised would be done.

Similarly, the Senate Committee Chairman, in a petition between Mr Olatunbosun S.E Odusanya versus Governing Council and VC, Federal University Oye-Ekiti, ruled that the Governing Council and VC of Federal University Oye-Ekiti should do the needful by reinstating the former Bursar and former Registrar, and allow them proceed on sabbatical leave to allow peace reign in the University. The University Council Chairman and Vice chancellor were also mandated by the committee to honour the Senate as an Institution by ensuring that their promise to the Committee to ensure that the two Principal officers who have served NIGERIA meritoriously for years in their capacity should not be disgraced out of office by termination for offenses that can not be substantiated because of personal differences, that any position that has a beginning must have an end. The VC and chairman of Governing Council were further mandated to forward the position agreed to resolve this matter Permanently to the Committee within the next 15days to enable the committee forward its report the the Senate for further legislative action for compliance in the interest of Justice and fair play. The statement concluded.

Likewise, the cases between Danladi Sunday Oladele versus Yaba College of Technology and Akeju Joseph Babatunde versus Yaba College of Technology were resolved in favour of the petitioners. The Committee Chairman commended the Position of Yaba College of technology expressed by The Rector of the Institution  to resolve he matters amicably through direct intervention with the Chairman of the governing council of Yaba college Technology on behalf of JB Akeju on presentation of appeal for commuting his dismissal to retirement to enable the institution pay all his benefits and entitlements. The Committee therefore mandated the petitioner to do the needful and submit an acknowledgment copy of the appeal to the Chairman of Council of Yaba college Technology to Committee secretariat within the next 7 working days for further legislative action.

However, the celebrated case between Timzing Veniyir Ramnap (Esq) versus Chairman, Code of Conduct Tribunal, Danladi Umar could not be heard as the respondent, CCT Chairman, had gone to court, challenging the jurisdiction of the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges and Public Petitions in the matter but in his wisdom, the Chairman said, "The case is hereby stepped down as the issue had been referred to the Legal department of the Senate for further action"

After the whole proceedings, the National President of  Association of Nigerian Students, who was in the Public Hearing said, "With all what I have seen today, Distinguished Senator Ayo Akinyelure deserves an Award and we are going to honour him. He is indeed the voice of the voiceless Nigerians and he is truly the Ombudsman of the Senate", the NANS President said.

Signed

SA (Media & Strategy) to the Distinguished Senator
